Copying a Parmigianino Masterpiece:

Parmigianino (Francesco Mazzola) (Italian, 1503 – 1540)

Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene

The original work was in a private collection in Britain until 2017 when it was sold to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles for more than $30 million. It is, unusually for an oil painting, painted on paper. I initially attempted to do the same but my oak support began to warp so I decided to stick to canvas. The size of my copy is identical to that of the original i.e. 75.5 x 59.7 cm. I am aiming to achieve a pretty close likeness, it would never pass for the real thing but I hope it will have at least some of the visual impact of the original. I expect to finish the painting this summer. Below are three images of my progress so far.
